2011 Course Offerings

The schedule of classes are listed monthly via the Times (FH Magazine), and via e-mail through Diversity Developments. All courses are available for registering through Net Learning.

Pre-Requisites

DIVERSITY AWARENESS 100 (DIV 100)

Prerequisite for other diversity classes - NEED ONLY TO BE TAKEN ONCE!

This class needs to be taken first for new supervisors/managers (below grade 70) who have not yet taken DIV 100.

This 4-hour course is specifically designed for the manager level employee. This is an introductory course that explores the concepts of diversity in general and how we can best deal with the challenges and opportunities inherent in a diverse organization.

Goal: To provide a rationale for a culture at Florida Hospital that enhances relationships among employees and between employees and clients.

Objectives:

  1. Define diversity in today's changing multicultural environment
  2. Share the focused findings of the Diversity Audit
  3. Give a terse example of diversity management
  4. Apply the concept of diversity awareness to Florida Hospital 's faith-based principles

DIVERSITY MANAGEMENT 202 (DIV 202) -- NEW Directors

Prerequisite for other diversity classes - NEED ONLY TO BE TAKEN ONCE!

This class needs to be taken first for new leaders (Grade 70+) who have not yet taken DIV 202.

This 4-hour course will focus on practical application of the principles of Diversity at the workplace. Attendees will use experiential learning techniques to explore hands-on activities they can use with staff.

Goals: To share additional practical knowledge for managing diversity and provide TOOLS that will give credence to the concepts of…

  1. team building in a diverse workplace
  2. enhancing relationships
  3. extending excellence

Objectives:

  1. Understand the leader’s ethical, moral, and spiritual privilege in the management of diversity
  2. Use various techniques to build strong relationships among diverse groups which will enhance inclusivity
  3. Be able to increase their empathy for individuals and groups that are usually excluded consciously/unconsciously from organizational participation
  4. Apply the concept of diversity awareness to Florida Hospital's faith-based principles

Additional Courses

AGING DIVERSITY – THROUGH TH'EYES OF A SENIOR

This 2 ½ hour workshop/course which was awarded Best Practice is designed to help participants gain an appreciation of how to interact with older adults and convey information through the use of hands-on activities. This course will provide the opportunity for employees to explore techniques and conversation and use of language to avoid misunderstandings and encourage dialog. Course is taught by Diversity guest presenter Linda Grassa, from the Orange County Office on Aging.

Goals: To eliminate perceived stereotypes and/or ageism references. Designed for participants to…

  1. purposefully and actively engage in the process

  2. employ positive communication techniques while interacting with and engaging older adults (55 - 100+)

Objectives:

 

  1. Identify why it's critical to educate businesses, community leaders and citizens on how to improve communication with older persons

  2. Recognize challenges that older persons may experience and how to modify oral presentations and written materials in response
  3. Determine the necessary action to take in order to replicate this sensitivity training in their community, including how to tailor a packet to their needs and how to engage a speaker's bureau to expand outreach

CULTIVATING DIVERSITY COMPASSION IN THE WORKPLACE

This 2 ½ hour course legitimizes the proper use of positive emotion in the workplace that will eventually enhance productivity. The study of Emotional Intelligence (EQ) is scientifically explained and validated. The tension between emotion and logic has been a dynamic duo since Socrates time. We will share the advantage that compassion gives in the workplace and how to adjust one's leadership style when a person attempts to take advantage of the leaders' compassion.

Goals:

  1. Cultivate compassion in the workplace
  2. Understand why comassion is necessary

Objectives:

  1. Define and examine the essence of 'Compassion'
  2. Discuss self-awareness and its importance i napplying compassion to others
  3. Examine 'Emotional' Intelligence' concepts
  4. Apply principles of the new and unique 'Business Case'
  5. Discuss 'Servant Leadership' principles
  6. Learn to avoid being victimized for extending compassion to others
  7. Learn to commit to compassion as a way of life

CROSS-CULTURAL COMMUNICATION

This 2 ½ hour course deals with the challenges of cross-cultural communication: communicating across gesture and language barriers. It also offers the participants aids to communication that can enhance workplace relationships and productivity.

Goal:

To provide comfortable communication between employees and employers patients and their care providers of different backgrounds.

Objectives:

Gain knowledge that will foster the acquisition of the following skills:

 

  1. to provide quality interpersonal interactions with colleagues and employees
  2. to provide culturally competent care for patients and clients
  3. to facilitate clear & kind speaking and enhance listening skills

DISABILITY AWARENESS

This 2 ½ hour course deals with understanding the value of differing abilities and it is paramount for increasing and maintaining productivity in the workplace. This course will provide the participant with knowledge and tools to:

OUCH! Your Silence Hurts (NEW)

This two-and-a-half hour course will help encourage silent, bystander employees to use their voices in a powerful and compelling way to speak up for respect on behalf of someone else. This course challenges participants by asking, “How will you personally respond next time you witness somebody being treated with disrespect and arming them with the tools to speak up against disrespectful behavior

OUCH! That Stereotype Hurts (NEW)

This 2 ½ hour course will help employees gain communication skills for success in today’s diverse world. This course will teach participants skills on how to build and sustain a respectful and inclusive environment in the workplace.
Goal: To explore communication skills for promoting inclusion and respect in the workplace.

Objective

    1. Understand the impact of stereotypes and biased statements, even when casually said
    2. Identify the most common reasons people sit silent in the face of bias and stereotypes
    3. Enhance skills for speaking up against stereotypes without blame or guilt

M.E.E.T. on Common Ground(NEW)/

 

This two-and-a-half hour course will help all commuicate effectively and build a respectful workplace where everyone can do their best work. This lecture is prepared to assist Florida Hospital's management and its employees as to how to create an atmosphere of cohesion with bi-lingual and English only speaking employees.

THE POWER OF MENTORING (Diversity emphasis)

 

This 2 ½ hour course will look at mentoring and its posturing in Diversity. Participants will observe the supportive roles that mentoring brings to employees and how it is directly related to organizational strength and competitiveness.

GENDER DIVERSITY

 

This 2-hour and a half hour course deals with women, who comprise 67% of the U.S. workforce. We acknowledge the negative biases still imposed upon women in the workplace. This class celebrates and identifies the unique talents and strengths that the male and female gender brings to the workplace and addresses some challenges that they both face.

 

 

Goal:

 

To facilitate cohesiveness through communication between the genders, and thereby enhance productivity.

 

Objective:

 

Explain the benefit of mutual respect Explain the role of respect in creating productive relationships Explain the importance of personal responsibility in promoting respect Use the four steps in the M.E.E.T. model to help promote a mutual respect working environment
